Are their short hikes available? Do you drive through the park - what kind of roads?

Yes, there are short hikes. Paved road that drives through.

There are a few short hikes near the visitor center and off of Abbott Drive. Most are a mile or less. The only paved roads in the park are Highway 14 and Abbott Drive. The other 30 miles of roads are primitive dirt roads that require moderate clearance and a little skill to drive.
