Over thousands and thousands of years, different layers of sandstone were deposited. Some of those layers in the park have iron "impurities" that turn the normally tan sandstone red when it is exposed to the atmosphere through a process called oxidation. It's the same chemical process that causes iron to rust.
There are many layers of sedimentary and sandstone due to many changes years ago. Many times over the millimeum oceans came and went stratifying and depositing different forms of rock. Then powerful winds carved the soft sandstone into strange shapes.
You can definitely see the layers, it's beautiful
