My daughter is studying in Italy starting January 21 to April 12 (82 days). She is not on a student visa. She is planning to travel after studies so total days is 93. Will she have trouble leaving the country?

In my research I was surprised to see that you don't need a student visa to study abroad in Italy if the academic portion is less than 91 days. But I would double check with the institution she is studying at to make sure a student visa is not required. I did find that you cannot stay longer than 90 days in the Schengen area. It does not matter if you come and go, they say that in a 180 day period you cannot stay more than 90 days. So the only way I think she is safe is if some of her travels take her out of a Schengen country for at least 3 days. There could be serious consequences to her overstaying, but there have been cases where nothing happens. She could be fined, or barred from entry the next time she goes to the EU. She does not need a student visa. She does plan to visit areas outside of Schengen region in the middle of her studies. Wondering if that buys her the 3 days she needs? Do you know whom we contact for find out for sure. None of these websites give clear direction. Thanks for your reply.
