I'm not sure. I'm American, my wife is Brazilian. I was previously married. She wanted to renew her passport, so first we needed an updated birth certificate sent from Brazil. It needed to be less than 6 months old, otherwise we couldn't use it. Also we needed our marriage certificate modified by the boro hall of Staten Island where we were married, then we needed to go to two addresses in Manhattan to have the marriage certificate amended for international use. Finally, I needed a notarized letter from the consulate stating that I'd never been married to a Brazilian before, and lastly, I needed brand new stamped copies of my divorce decrees. Then after ALL of that, on the 4th visit to the consulate, my wife got a renewed passport!
