Save yourself a lot of time and stress and use the valet. Sometimes it can take a really long time to find a space, and I have a handicapped placard.
For parking, we have several parking options - FREE valet at the front entrance, the parking lot at the back entrance and the off-site lot across the Ashley River Bridge that has handicap spaces and a FREE shuttle service. For more detailed information on our parking services, please visit this link: https://www.charleston.va.gov/visitors/parking.asp
Yes, there is parking close to VA. Also they have valet parking for free if that helps. They have lots of handicap parking in front of the VA clinics too.
Things have changed quite a bit at the VA, they have since built a parking garage and open more space for parking for the veterans by having the employees park at a different location to accommodate the veterans. However "some" employees still park at the hospital for various reasons but none-the-less the bulk of employees park off site.

Why would someone have to have someone stay with a patient that is brought to VAto get Methadone?
