If they are “walking out” of any hospital perhaps they need to go to either their PCP or urgent care. The long wait times are because people who are too sick to walk in or out are prioritized over idiots using the ER for something non emergent.
They have always had hours of wait times. I never understood it. I understand it's a teaching hospital but ...I mean ...really... It's ridiculous wait times.
I worked in ERs for 15 yrs, albeit not in FL. However, the biggest issue is people using EDs as PCPs. While easier cases take less time, you still have to meet standards of care and for EM it is extensive. Additionally, critical cases take priority. One we had a cardiac arrest drive up to the entrance & a person waiting started complaining that that person was going back before them. I helped to build an hospital in AZ that saw 43K it's first year with only 21 rooms. The reason: easier cases sat in the hallways and did not get a bed. That is one way to manage by having a Fast track type area where people can sit instead of taking up a bed. The satellite ER concept with Shands is awesome and helps. The only complaint is another 1-2 residents & attending needed to read CTs and x-rays because those take way too long (3-4 hrs if at satellite ED). I worked at one hospital in AZ when winter visitors caused wait times to be 26+ hrs because the 450 bed hospital needs 800 during the winter.
If people would use the ER for true emergencies this would not be a issue. Ive seen them come in with a runny nose, they bent their finger just ridiculous stuff that Urgent Care or if you have a Dr can care for you. I get so aggravated wit this. ER is for true emergemcies so dont complain if you have to wait 12 hours take a look around and see who really needs the ER not many i guarantee you
I never had to wait long out of all the years I been going there they have good service
So administrative hire more staff. Its a disgraced to sit in their waiting room for aslong as 16 hours. Bathrooms sare filty. Staffs only answer for delay is we r working on a room right now.i received that answer along many others and 10 hours later finally got my room. No food dirty drinking fountain.i went to ER for stat admission , dextreme pain.of course no orders for med couldnt help me until seen by Dr. It was absolutely horrible. Never again. M ayo in Jacksonville is so much further advanced then Shands.
ED is not a pcp for one. Unfortunately Im one that has to be dying to go but... when my doctors (pcp) and Hemo send me for a possible blood clot and I wait 8hrs to be seen and have to sit in ER waiting area with sick coughing etc. People... HELL NO!! I use the quick ER and if its bad they send me to big ED. WHICH I must say can still give you a wait time. They need masks for those of us immune compromised pts. Not just the give away cough kind either. They are useless. Second of all havibg Lupus Im not supposed to be left in a compromising area like waiting with normal sick pts. Shands has to much on their plates. Students/residents take to long because its a teaching hospital and everything is a lesson. Your just a number, address issue and pass to next doc and charge a fortune for your recomandation/referral to another. May be a great teaching hospital with great advances but quality of care, finding issues is very lacking. Tell you you have internal organs on a CT that you dont even
