Yes, it's always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and to have a plan for potential problems or encounters that most likely won't happen but I've been coming out here for over 30 years and it has never been safer. FYI, much of the forest has cell signal. At least Verizon that I know of. But yes it's safe, get out there and explore. Enjoy
I have dogs I never walk solo. They probably scare whatever away...I saw bears, owls, deer, many birds. Always becarefull in the forests anyways. I stay on trails.
With the number of possible hazards, I would only recommend short trail trips for solo hikers. Keep in mind, this forest has not just wildlife hazards but also many homeless.
With the world as it is today... I'd tell anyone to use the buddy system. There are RV parks closing due to rainbow people and homeless are taking to the woods.. Unless you carry and even then I'd use the buddy system...
