Visa on arrival is 30days that can be extended a max of 30days at an immigration office in Thailand for a fee. You can get a 60 day tourist visa at the Thailand Consulate for which you have to apply and pay a fee. Multiple entry visa is available at the Thailand Consulate by applying and paying a few. Other visas are available depending on your requirements. You should check the Thailand Consulate website.

It all depends on how long you're going to stay Thailand. if you're coming for Thailand you will get an automatic 30-day Visa as soon as you land at Bangkok or Chiang Mai airport. Those are the only two airports that you can enter through customs. if you're planning to stay longer than 30 days you can see immigration and see if they will give you a 90. If you're planning on retiring at Thailand, then you're going to have to go through the embassy in Los Angeles or wherever your embassy is at and get a retirement Visa good for one year
