Veterans can get a State Park pass for free and it is good for all California State parks.

In summer there is someone at the entrance gate and you have to pay to get in. Out of season you would use a parking ticket machine and display your ticket in the window. Not sure how much this is enforced, but you could also just get an annual park pass and not worry about the machine.
