The most important thing is always be aware of your surroundings. You can't walk around like a zombie taking selfies at the grand canyon. If worried always use your rear camera not front camera in selfie mode to take your pics at the grand canyon.

Its not that dangerous, it's just people who ignore posted warning signs and climb over safety rails to take selfies. People who act responsibly are completely safe.
