There are not as many crowds from sunrise to about 9am. So if you want to take a shuttle, do it then. But don't get too obsessed with seeing all the points. Walk along the trail by the canyon or rent a bike. The more you ride the shuttle, the less you see of the canyon. We found it only worth it taking the shuttle to Hopi point and no further. If you want to hike the trails going into the canyon, you may want 2 or 3 days. And make sure you are equipped for it.
The South Rim is by far better and has everything for tourists. Two days is enough and another two days in Sedona which has many great sightseeing and many nice shops in downtown. The bus shuttle system is very nice and free to hop on and off at ech view points which takes few hours not counting your stops. The Bright Angel Trailhead at South Rim is a must hike. We did 1 1/2 hike that it took three hours. It is very safe for all ages and you get to experience the canyon at different level. We stayed at the Grand Canyon Plazza hotel 10 min outside of the park. There are cabins and hotels inside the park but you have to reserve them way in advance.
So much to see at the Grand Canyon. Determine which Rim you want to visit! The South Rim seems to be more common & you can definitely make a day trip there & if you drive instead of the shuttle bus you can determine how long you stay at each view & see a lot of great points, the Desert Watch Tower was my fav. Not a lot distance inbetween views but there are a lot of views! If you decide to stay awhile you can see places like the Hopi House & do some hiking there for an even more elevated experience. They have a lot of park rangers & tour guides. You can even get backpacking packages. Although if you get motion sick easily I wouldn't recommend it. There are hotels & camping options there as well so if you do decide to stay longer you can also attend events they may have going on also! I would look up events on their page at the time you're thinking of visiting! If you're trying to go to the Skywalk that I believe is on the West rim closer to NV?
If you go to the national park, there are free shuttle buses between viewing areas. You can walk, but plan on several hours to walk the couple of miles between each area. I would recommend at least two days for a nice visit, and that way you can catch a sunset and/or sunrise over the canyon.
You can purchase bus tours and cover it in a day. If you'd like to walk, you should give yourself several days.

2 questions: What time do they open? I want to watch the sunrise. What time should I arrive?
