Contrary to Finally Alive's review, citing the west end as one of the best spots, its actually those spots rarely visited that make the island so special. On the north side of the island, just west of the I-205 bridge is a semi secluded cove that fades to a puddle later in the summer. My personal favorite, however is at the eastern end of the island nestled on one of the beaches in the channel between Govt. and Maguire islands. The breakwater that difuses the rivers strong currents giving the area a more lake type atmosphere. Few boats wander into the area making it one of the most serene camping areas youll find inside a city limit, anywhete!
There is R.V. parking at the boat launch (There is also a fee), but you MUST have a boat to get to Government Park... it's an island. If you do have a boat, it's definitely worth it! There is no fee to camp, just parking. Weekdays are much less busy, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday being the busiest days. The western tip is one of the best spots!
