Is it possible to get inside the fort and walk around it from the inside

Yes! Pretty bare but neat experience.

Yes, when we went we had the option of the guided tour but opted for just walking around the fort exploring it for ourselves.

once it reopens, you can walk it yourself or take a guided tour. Bring water and a flashlight and camera. You'll be glad you did
