The park was named after a botanist joel poinsett the first popularizer of the poinsettia.. The site was used by various siouan tribes for hunting an may have lived nearby.. Then was used as a mill.. Finally it was owned by two singletons.. Then 1000 acres was set aside to make the park.. It opened to everyone in 1936
