Start at the visitor center, do the North Grove which will take you less than an hour and then take the drive out to the South Grove and hike it. Experiencing the south grove requires at least 3 to 4 hours depending on how far and how fast you want to go but is well worth it. You could of course, reverse that if you wanted to, but seeing the visitor center first gives you a great overview of the park and the forest.
The Visitors Center is always a good place to start. They offer docent walks through the grove from there. Parking can get busy,
You can also try the North Grove Trail. It's an easy trail that has spectacular redwood trees.
Parking lot gets busy on weekends.
There's a short nature trail which is a must for a short visit.
