Train ride was great. The hour and a half layover between trips with limited choices to eat or entertain, not so much.

A great experience, friendly hosts, train excursions, all in a historic walkable area of Cumberland Maryland.

We took the pumpkin patch trip. The trip was smooth and the carriages were roomy. Note: the seats can be flipped. The getting on and off is a high step and can be a challenge for some. The staff was super friendly. For the price this was a fun family adventure.

the pumpkin ride was cute.

That was exactly what I was looking for, thank you. I've never been on it before and noticed there were numerous rides so I wasn't sure if they were the same time wise or not.
There is a parking lot across the street, it operates like a parking garage. We were there this past weekend. Gates were open with no charge.
You should not have been charged for the first class.
Bring snacks and keep the coolers in your car. The parking lot is right across from the station tracks. Now, I took a Pepsi and 2 small packages of peanut butter crackers on the open-air car, and there was no problem.
Yes you can. I would bring snacks at least its a 3 hour trip.
Yes. For all trains. The Frostburg Flyer, Dinner trains, and All #1309 Steam Trains. Bikes are handled from Cumberland up to Frostburg so you may ride back down to Cumberland on the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail.
They are not sorry 😥
Absolutely, you can. Just go to the WMSR.COM website and order your tickets all together. I highly recommend you wait until the Fall Foliage trains in October. So beautiful and worth the wait!
Yes they must remain on your lap if it's a little dog, or on a leash.
You can get "store credit" towards another trip. However you cannot get your money back if you cancel.
They get there about 12:30 to 12:35 it depends if they leave Cumberland station at 11:30
45 minutes to an hour
You can BUT it can't be consumed on the train. There are a lot of good restaurants in Frostburg so no need to bring it with you.
The Potomac Eagle was actually my first choice. Sadly I didn't realize they sold out so quickly.
For 2022, the last Frostburg Flyer ride and the last Pumpkin Patch ride are on 30 October. The last Polar Express ride is on 24 December. There is a special New Years Eve dinner excursion on 31 December. (This is as far as the WMSR calendar shows as of September 2022). There is no senior discount for tickets, but prices are $15 for the pumpkin patch ride, $45 to $300 for the Frostburg Flyer, depending on your car, $30 - $60 for the Polar Express and $132.99 for the special New Year's Eve dinner train.
During the Frostburg Flyer trip on 17 September 2022, the 1309 Steam engine (restoration finished in December 2020) pulled the front of the train from Cumberland to Frostburg and the 450 diesel engine (formerly an Amtrak train) pulled the front of the train from Frostburg back to Cumberland. Both trains were running for the entire excursion. There is a small turntable near the Frostburg depot, but it was not used by the train. If you are in the open air car, you will get covered in significantly more ash when the steam train is in front (although both directions are quite ashy). Make sure that you book a ride on the WMSR website that says -Steam after the title to see the steam train.
Go on line and check the schedule it changes in the fall
We went September 23rd and it was too early. If you wait until the end of October it will be too late.
Yes you can take pictures most people do
The Frostburg Flyer ride on Thursday 22 September 2022 will feature a diesel engine, not the 1309 steam engine. The steam engine is featured on the Frostburg Flyer rides on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The WMSR's website says that it is possible to swap your diesel engine ticket for a steam engine ticket on a different day if you call the office.
Leave Cumberland at 11:30. Arrive Frostburg at 1:00. Depart Frostburg 2:30. Back to Cumberland at 4:00.
We were there weekend before last and they said it would be out for 2 weeks for the annual inspection....
There is no pumpkin patch on the ride to frostburg. Maybe some other train ride. Check their website.
Food/drinks yes. Alcohol possibly. I believe they sell it in beverage train
Depends on which package you get I think, but also they have a snack car
As of September 2022, the 1309 Steam engine is running. It pulls the front of the Frostburg Flyer from Cumberland to Frostburg and pushes the back of the train from Frostburg to Cumberland on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It departs from and returns to the rail yard in Ridgeley, WV.
No! They are closed!!
Currently not running due to covid but, 1309 restoration is near completion!
We were just in Cumberland last weekend and the train was shut down and the station was closed. We were told by locals that no reopening date has been announced.
I don't think they are having any trips this year. Did you try the website
Not sure. Sorry. The day time trips are amazing
Visiting the museum and the train depot/souvenir shop are both free. They are open while the train rides are operating. I suggest arriving in front of the museum around or slightly before 10:40am when the Frostburg Flyer excursion is running. This way, you can watch the train cross the canal bridge and arrive at the station (it departs from its home base in Ridgeley, WV) and then tour the museum. The museum guides are very friendly and will explain all of the artifacts to you. There are some free postcards and stickers and donations are accepted. I recommend visiting the depot/souvenir shop after the train has departed, otherwise it will be congested. You can purchase T-shirts, DVDs, and train ornaments in the depot, along with taking some free tourism brochures for western Maryland. The train will arrive back at the station with the diesel train in front around 3:50 pm, if you want to watch it arrive in the afternoon. There is no charge to stand on the depot platform.
They have food on the train, but you can take some on with you too!
No. We just went and some people dress up a bit and some people were in shorts and a t-shirt. One thing to note, bring something warm to wear because the cars get cold. We went in the middle of August on a pleasant night (75 degrees outside) and were in business casual attire and it was pretty cold in the car. The Air Conditioner ran the whole time and keeps it pretty chilly.
As far a I no is everyday
I didnt notice any diesel smell. The windows were closed though. Dont know if that makes a difference
50 for coach class
Short answer is yes. However I would call the ticket desk and talk with "Jill". She will be able to help you and answer any questions you may have.
As of September 2022, the 1309 Steam Engine is restored and running for the Frostburg Flyer rides and it will also run for the Polar Express train rides.
Crabby pig in back of cable company.their food is a little bit of heaven.loved it. Not bad price either
Probably best to plan on bringing your own meal. You can call the ticket office & check the availability of a special meal meeting your needs.
Yes
No
Give them a call. Best way
I searched the site but did not see any special pricing. There's a phone number to call. It's open for calls Mon-Fri
Weight, age of turntable . I actually thought jt is suppose to be used when 1309 returns
Yes they have an area for them.
Be best to check there website i did the winter wonderland trip and very much enjoyed it
It rides as long as the tracks are clear.
1) the website should answer your questions 2) not sure about the weather affecting the tracks but probably not. 3) you can definitely buy tickets at the station as long as there are seats available.
You could have had an answer by going to their website in the same amount of time you spent on this website.
I am sorry, I didn't take the train ride. However, staff was very friendly in Train Depot
I would not take kids who cant sit still or cooperate well in tight settings, there is no room to walk around unless there is a stop and then you can get up and move freely
I'm pretty sure you can buy tickets when you get there. Ours were purchased ahead of time only because we ate on board the train and they needed to know how many meals to fix. Hope that helps. My sister reserved our tickets online and i would hope they have a number you can also call for questions. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Generally a lunch is included but it depends on if you get the dining cart
The tip is not included but it's up to you how much if any
Once the 1309 reatoration is complete (which it should be within the next year) and then the 734 should have its overhaul so withing the next 2 years expect it to be up and running again
The WMSR's website says, "Children 2 and under may sit on adult’s laps for the journey and not require a ticket. Children 3 and above will require a ticket. If you do not wish to hold your child in your lap you will be required to purchase a ticket for them regardless of age."
save your money regardless of hours of opoeration. You will be very dissaspointed. You were warned
1-800-TRAIN50
I think they are giving it a mandatory overhaul.
If you go to their website, you will find the schedule for all trains.
