It depends on where in NJ you are going. If you are going to the garden state pky north or south or the NJ turn pike to I 95 south and you are traveling south its the best way to go. The original plans had a walkway but wasn't carried out. One CAN cross the bridge by bicycle during the annual 5 boro bike tour, run across during the NYC Marathon and last time I walked across was in celebration of its opening 1964-1989.
