Another of the lighthouses in the area to visit is the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Again it was just pretty interesting to learn more about the history of the lighthouses on the eastern coast especially on the barrier islands. This place is historically known for being the graveyard of the Atlantic because of the waves and winds and currents. The lighthouses helped to protect the shipping traffic along the coast and it's interesting to visit them and learn about them. I recommend this place if you're looking for another Lighthouse to visit on the islands or if you're looking for a break from the beach.

This is a great lighthouse, but I'm not too happy that we ended up needing a reservation for it. We weren't told this in advance. I was supposed to go up it with my father. I ended up being the only one exploring it and my father just waited in the car with my mother. In the future, I hope there is better communication regarding this place to the customers.

This is one of my favorite lighthouses. You do need to purchase tickets in advance on the NP website. It takes a few minutes to set up an account, so plan ahead during busy seasons. The view at the top is well worth the climb. Good place to picnic, restrooms available.

What a wonderful lighthouse to visit. This makes only the second time in my life to come here, but they've improved it since I last came here in the early 2000's. Gift shop prices were a little high but given that most of the proceeds go to maintaining the lighthouse and the grounds makes it worth it. The dock that leads out into the marsh makes for a great view too. While the lighthouse itself was closed for our visit, I was not disappointed. I would like to come visit again someday.

Francis Gibbons was contracted to build it in 1847.
If you read through obxstuff.com/pages/bodie-island-lighthouse. I am sure you will find your answer. Glad you asked or I never would have known that it has been rebuilt completely three times! Thanks for asking!
The light rotares to be more noticeable. I have read that the speed at which the light rotates assists with identification of the specific lighthouse.
It has been reopened.
Sure but it is closed for tours right now because it's the off-season so you need to visit it if you want to go up in it around September it closes at the end of September for the season
The lighthouse system was designed to alert boats of Shoreline locations and also help with navigation. In the day in the daylight each Lighthouse has unique stripe patterns in the nighttime each lighthouse has unique light signals. This way the captains would know where they are on the Eastern seaboard and how far it was to the next lighthouse.
not sure I'm a union stack bricklayer would guess 8 months
You don't need a reservation to see the light house and walk around the grounds, that's free, but if you want to walk up inside the light house, you need a ticket and its $10 per person. They go every 30 minutes. It is worth it.
Not sure what a fack is. But, some facts about this light house are that it is still operational, it is the third Bodie Island Lighthouse to be built, and the name Bodie Island derives from the the amount of bodies that washed up on the island from shipwrecks.
The name Bodie Island is from the landowner and settler of the area. His name was spelled Body or Boddy. A more interesting "legend" is from the many shipwrecks(bodies) that washed ashore in the Outer Banks. Hence "Grave Yard of the Atlantic."
The signs near the lighthouse describe that Bodie Island had many shipwrecks. At one place you could see 15 at once. The light from this one shown for 19 miles and warned ships not to approach too close to avoid future wrecks.
10 bucks for adults and 5 bucks for each kid from 5 to 11years of age. The kids must be 42 inches tall.
Yes it is and you can see the light on just as it says on the sign about it's history
I think that all national parks are closed and Bodie Island falls under their control
No. The lighthouse itself closed for visitors on Columbus Day. I believe that the adjacent visitors center may still be open.
Total of 219 steps to the balcony. There are 17 granite steps, then 202 metal steps.
From wikipedia: In 1837, an expedition commissioned by the US government and led by Lieutenant Napoleon L. Coste began to find a spot for a new lighthouse on the dangerous Outer Banks. Coste finally settled on an Oceanside location in Pea Island, noting that "more vessels are lost there than on any other part of our coast." It doesnt specify who did the actual construction.
Started construction spring of 1871, was finished and first lit October 1st 1872
The grounds are, but you can't climb during the off season.
No ferry required. The theory is only required if one is going to Ocracoke Island, Swan Quarter, or Cedar Island.
