The lighthouse system was designed to alert boats of Shoreline locations and also help with navigation. In the day in the daylight each Lighthouse has unique stripe patterns in the nighttime each lighthouse has unique light signals. This way the captains would know where they are on the Eastern seaboard and how far it was to the next lighthouse.
