A super fun national monument! The Ranger at the visitor center was more than welcoming and helped us choose a couple hikes/caves based on our time available. He even lent us a couple flashlights for our journey. The caves are (obviously) super dark so be sure to bring/get a flashlight/headlamp and wear good shoes, it was be very uneven, wet, and rocky.

It was a great place to explore..if you going late in the evening get your own light.. they stop giving light hour before 5.. there are lot of caves to caves to explore… easily you could spend a day there. Pack your lunch and spend the day it will be worth… the landscape was beautiful too.. if you are in that area stop by the nearby National wildlife refuges.. you could see birds, coyotes and deers..

Has to be one of my favorite parks in the US. The fact you can go caving by yourself is great. You just need to check in at the visitor center and get the voucher to hang in the car window. You will need a good torch and a backup and a …

This place is very much in the middle of a lot of open countryside. A very nice visitor centre provides information about the area and here you can book your drive to discover the caves with different level of experience and expertise …

Agreed, no crystals but great things to see regardless.
Park is open 24 hrs. Rangers are not available after dusk, so let someone know where and when you are expected to be, if you are planning to camp in a cave since it is very easy to get lost in lot of these caves structures.
We took an 86 year old lady into the Valentine tube. The floor is pretty flat and we took her in almost 100 feet. You need a strong wheel chair with good wheels, though.
Medicine lake volcano was active for 500,00p yrs. Various eruptions formed over 700 tube caves. The lava tubes form when a stream of lava stays hot and continues to flow as the outside cools and hardens. The hot lava drains out, creating a pipe-like cave.
Yes. It is a US National Monument. National Monuments and National Parks are both managed by Dept of Interior. An America the Beautiful Pass provides annual access to all Dept of Interior public lands - or you can purchase a day pass at Lava Beds NM.
It's really worth the drive, so cool, so much obsidian..obsidian as big as your table😱😍
Hard hat good pair of boots/shoes, flashlight, gloves if your hands get cold. But they may have most of the things needed at the time of the tour.
No
In reality, the area represents the geographical makeup of all of eastern Oregon more than California. I would read more about the area before visiting to get an idea of the sites you will want to visit while there.
Yes, a shield volcano
I bring my dog to the Lava Beds but it is not allowed on the fire lookout trail and dogs need the booties , the Lava rock is sharp.
The caves are probably open if you can get through the front gate. There are other caves outside the front gate if the gate is closed.
20 for a normal passenger car to get into the park... I believe (it's been a while it might be 10) Beyond that the flashlights and park are free
Yes. It is called Indian Well campground not far from the visitor center. 43 sites are all on 1st come basis. Currently it is $10.00 per night. Loop A sites 4, 5 and 6 have beautiful views. Restrooms are flush toilets. No showers
It's a large area of old Lava flows, Lava tubes (tunnels) a beautiful quiet park. Well worth it.
I think it was once like artica
