In reality, the area represents the geographical makeup of all of eastern Oregon more than California. I would read more about the area before visiting to get an idea of the sites you will want to visit while there.
The general area is very unique to California, geographically speaking. It has the look and feel more akin to Montana and Wyoming. In addition, there is a national park nearby that is home to bald eagles, bears, and a litiny of other wildlife. This is all on top of the lava beds themselves, which you can easily explore for days. Well worth the visit.
Historic significance, great views, lava tubes to cave in.
