Love this campground. Beautiful views and good hiking from here. Bring maps--can climb two fourteeners and access a Beautiful alpine lake from the zapata falls trail. Campground host is great! He really keeps an eye out and doesn't let anyone into the campground who doesn't have a reservation.

We climbed the 4-mile dirt road to 9,000’ elevation and the Zapata Falls Campground located not to far from the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The wind kicked up and it rained on us shortly after arriving: the first rain we’ve experienced since mid-March back in ABQ. Once it cleared we took a short hike up to see the Falls. Well worth getting our feet wet (and freezing cold)! The campground host was super friendly! We’re giving it four-stars because our campsite’s parking area was in a slope and we sleep in our van. We placed rocks behind each wheel for extra precaution.

It's beautiful. That said I'm physically handicapped and walked up the rocky trail only to turn back. My husband did the hike up to it. He said very good hiking boots that can get wet are the shoes to wear. No sandals. Kids can do it with their parents supervision. The rocks do move near the falls. There was still frozen ice. Lots of dogs on the trail. Took about 2 hrs to do it. Bug spray is a must. The flies are terrible. Have something to drink. There are pit toilets in the parking lot.

Beautiful place to camp. Very relaxing. The drive up is very rough unless you have an awesome truck I have a Honda Accord but it still worked I stayed one night $11 per night. It had a bear bin and flat surfaces for tents. Fire ring and a picnic table. Beautiful views all around. I would definitely camp here again if I had a big truck. And maybe the road work will make it easier for cars in the future.

Hard to say. Usually weekdays are easier to get a spot. Thursday the 2nd should be a good day
No electric available at campground. A very harsh 3.3 mile road to drive. Camping is first come first serve and they have a day use parking lot. Pit toilets and trash only.
I don't think so, we were there five last weekend, we drove all around, and there were only 3 more vehicles at the campground. From the parking lot we walk about 10 minutes to the falls, they were frozen, beautiful!
This is always a first come first serve campground. Was just there a couple weeks ago and was the only one there. AWD or 4x4 a must to get all the way up to the campground and trailhead.
There's only a few spots where I could say I actually needed the high clearance (I drive a 4runner). You could make it in a car with an experienced driver that can pick easy lines and stay 100% alert on the drive in and out. It will be very bumpy tho. Be careful. Towing someone out of there wouldn't be fun or cheap.
We were there a week ago on a Sunday night and about 3/4 the campground was empty when we got there about 6pm. By the next morning there was a decent amount of sites filled. It is first come first serve campground.
You gotta just drive up, ignore "campground full" signs and ask the camp host.
