my absolute favorite museum i have ever been to. the butterfly exhibit was extraordinary and i loved being able to experience the planetarium show. the jellyfish were absolutely mesmerizing and i appreciated the diversity in sea life. the aquarium was great and i loved seeing the alligator. great for kids and adults. plenty to see, do, and learn.

We always have a good time at the academy! There's alot to see and experience, which means you could actually spend a day or two trying to see it all. We love the rainforest and aquarium in particular. The only bummer right now is even though they require proof of vaccination to enter you still need to keep a mask on. The mandate has been lifted and most places aren't requiring masks anymore so it seems a little overly cautious.

This place has soo much to offer! The process to enter was clean- go online and book the slot that works best for you. Its about $45 per head for 1 and half hour. I was told they are all rotating exhibits - so each time you go might be different. There was a live penguin exhibit , fog entrance and rainforest which was so beautifully maintained, shark exhibit- you’ll definitely find something that’s fascinate you! It’s perfect for all age groups!

This was a fun aquarium/science center that focused more on biology than other areas like energy or spaces. We went in their first ticketed group at 9:30am and it felt like we had the aquarium to ourselves. 90 minutes later it felt very busy in the museum so I recommend getting there early.

$35.95 and access to aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum.
Depends on the day, weekends and special exibits can make it crazy to park. They offer paid parking in the lot and free street parking but sometimes its not enough and you could end up parking a ways away and walking. The rest of the time the free parking isnt to hard to get.
Unless you are going to an event that specifically says there's a dress code, there isn't one.
My wife & I are both over the age of 30 and loved it! 😁
We spent 6-7 hours on average if you watch planetarium show only once. Sometimes, you might spend lesser if you skip the shows.
There is a parking lot under that you have to pay for parking. Or you can park on the street around the Academy for free, but that usually fills up quick depending on what time you go.
They have many sections, including dinosaurs and geology, but also ecosystems and the ocean, space, etc.
Hourly rate: $5.00 weekdays, $29.00 maximum $6.00 weekends, $33.00 maximum See http://goldengateparking.com/ (for the Music Concourse garage)
They have a coat check area where they can store personal items.
35$ adult
I don't believe so. It's mainly a place discussing the life sciences, geology, and other branches of science that discuss Earth as a whole. It's like a zoo that describes things in a lot more depth. Regardless, it's a fun place to be, and I'm sure you'll find something you'll enjoy.
Yes! They are open until 5pm.today.. but expect alot of people and the limited parking space
We went just last month, end of April 2022 and yes. It requires full vaccination for all children and adults that are eligible to get it. No masks are required anymore but vax cards are checked at the entrance. Pls check website to confirm. Reservations are strongly encouraged. If someone has symptoms or are feeling ill they are eligible for a refund or will reschedule your visit.
You can bring your own food and eat in the cafeteria. Or outside it's a nice place to eat with benches
Yes October 18-19 free for 94107
Hi Patricia. The Academy is used to managing large crowds. I've attended functions with large groups and seen them assist schoolbuses filled with kids, all arriving sort of the expected date (NorCal traffic being what it is ☺). I think you'll find the docents and entry staff amiable and accomodating. Have a great time and Happy NewYear!
Yes I used to run saltwater reef tanks in my teenage years as my main hobby and I had some amazing stuff. This place had exhibits that blew my mind she will love it! -Good Vibes...
Yes it is open. But some areas close early
$40 adults $35 teens $30 kids 4-11
Yes they have manual chairs available first come first serve basis and they are free to use.
$40 adults $35 teens $30 kids age 4-11
No but they do group tour discounts but you have to call for that info. They do offer an adult student discount with ID
Yes you can! As long as it doesn't contain any peanuts or peanut fiber in it's contents.
$30 I think
park on the street. the lot is very expensive. but if you're parking on the street, get there early and be prepared for at least a quarter mile walk, if you get lucky.
They have 4 free days every year. This year dates September 24, 2017, Dec 10, 2017, Jan 11, 2018 and June 3, 2018
9:30 am
No, the have a ticket desk where you can get free tickets for a particular show time. Go to the desk first, as they run out of tickets, and you may have to wait several hours or be out of luck. You can also stand by for a show, in case they have no shows.
As far as I know, backpacks are OK. Check with the Academy to be sure. calacademy.org
There is a designated parking structure located towards the entrance to the museum. There are road signs that will guide you the entire way once you enter the park. I believe it's called the Music Concourse Parking Garage. It is paid parking garage, too. Hope this helps!
Hi Alexa! Thanks so much for being part of our member-family. Membership expires at the end of the month in which it was purchased.
Hello Adrian! It's 44 O'Shaughnessy.
Hi Amanda! We're located within 10 minutes of four MUNI bus and Metro lines—find the one that works best for you at https://www.calacademy.org/getting-here. Thanks!
No you can't at the Academy of Sciences but you can at the De Young
No pets allowed
Hello Nick! Free, street parking can be found along MLK Dr., Nancy Pelosi Dr., and Stow Lake Dr. (As with elsewhere in SF, you'll want to allow yourself some extra time to locate a spot.) The Music Concourse Garage isn't associated with the Academy but may be a good option for you—their website with contact info is here: http://goldengateparking.com/. Thanks!
I showed my hard copy. My wife show a picture so I think you will be OK. Guy at the the door was a young kid sure he would accept
The garage closes at 7 pm but may be open later for special events (signs at the entry will indicate a later closing time). Hourly: $5 per hour M-F and $6 per hour weekends Daily: $29 maximum M-F and $33 maximum weekends Evening/Weekend: $17 Flat Rate for entries after 5:30PM nightly
Hi Greg, yes! You'll still need to reserve a show using the Waitwhile app once you arrive at the museum, but Planetarium capacity has now increased from 25% to 100% (aligning with California's reopening guidance), with 4 shows every weekday and 7 shows every weekend. Thanks so much for asking—and for visiting!
Hi Nellie! You can generally find free 3- or 4-hour parking spots on Nancy Pelosi Drive and MLK Drive (depending on how busy the event is, this can sometimes take a bit of searching). We also recommend checking out easy public transportation solutions via MUNI Metro or bus lines, and you can find those details at https://www.calacademy.org/getting-here. Thanks!
I believe it's only schools from California
You can buy online at calacademy.org/buy-tickets ; I just checked, slots from 1:30 pm onwards are available.
Hi again, Kendall! Our updated HVAC system keeps fresh air moving at all times. This includes purging outside air before and after guests enter certain spaces, reducing the use of recirculated air, and increasing filtration and the frequency of filter changes throughout the building. As always, please give us a call at 415-379-8000 if you'd like to talk/ask more about it—very happy to help.
Hi Kendall, thanks for your question! We are indeed open now, and we're extremely serious about ensuring the safety of our visitors and staff. For a full list of measures in place—from our new reservation system, to mask policy, to flow re-routing—please see https://calacademy.org/reopening. And if you have additional questions you'd like to talk through, please feel free to give us a call at 415-379-8000. Thanks!
Yes. It's open from 9:30am to 5pm on Jan 20
I have never seen any however it may be best to call the support number on their website https://www.calacademy.org/
For that day or on that day for another day? They are limited from what we were told so i would say buy em asap
Yes the academy of sciences is open on Christmas day from 11AM to 5PM (link here https://www.calacademy.org/hours-admission )
I got this from Google: Steinhart Aquarium is one of the most biologically diverse and interactive aquariums on Earth. Home to nearly 40,000 live animals, representing more than 900 unique species, it offers guests an unprecedented view of underwater and terrestrial habitats.
It's great throughout most of the museum, though I would hesitate to go up the ramps in the rainforest exhibit on the basis of their steepness. There are elevators that will let you access each level of the rainforest
The next event on the 26th is $15.75 for one adult. It may be less expensive for a student with ID. The website has plan-ahead pricing if you want to purchase before the event.
They had a bag check. I don't know if it had any size limits or anything.
I am only aware of college student discount that includes UC students
Probably not.
If I had to guess it's probably 6'5". I drove in with an Audi Q7 with no issues and there were full size SUVs in the garage too
Depends on where you are coming from. If you are coming from East Bay, yes most likely you will have to pay the toll at least once.
Yes, there is no problem buying the same day.
1. Price depends on a weekday. For kids from 3-17 you have to pay $25-35. Usually they trust you. 2. Yes, you can use membership right after registration. Enjoy your visit!
32 to 37 dollars.
Renzo Piano's design with all its green features might be called Sustainable Architecture.
Allow a few extra minutes. Purchasing your tickets online will speed things up.
Sometimes, it depends on your date and your zip code. Check the site for the specifics
Unmetered parking the SF golden gate parking. It does get packed but you should still find a spot. It'll just be a little walk
Yes...ID is Must... it is the only identity card to prove that he is a student
I went to the museum yesterday (Sunday) and the rainforest was open as normal :)
Those are English Sycamore trees. They get cut back like that - to the knobby parts - so that they grow more full and rounded when the leaves come back.
Either way
35.95 for adult, 30.95 for young adult (11-17) and 25.95 (4-11).
Not sure..I didn't see any
Yes. Their website states they're open 365 days a year
Yes they have a luggage storage
This link here describes all free admission opportunities: https://www.calacademy.org/free-reduced-admission Looks like there is no free day specifically for only seniors.
Ok...... Good answer but nice guessing. 👍
There are activities that are carried out in English and Spanish. The posters for the exhibitions were only in English.
9.30 am to 5.00 pm but better check at the website
School field trips are free. Just have to register online with an accurate head count (both kids and chaperones)
They have several shows throughout the day. Last one is at 430, i believe.
Yes, it has the largest aquarium in the city and it is located on the lower level of the museum
I looked around myself, but could not find any, not even on Groupon. I think it's maybe because they are non-profit. So, just think of it as you are donating to a good cause.
About $40. That covers cost to get into Cal Academy, and the Steinhart Aquarium inside.
"The Academy is open 365 days a year, meaning every day is a good day to visit. In addition to more than 20 active exhibits, each day there's a wide range of activities, shows, events, and tours." From their website.
If you mean a pushchair or stroller for kids, of course yes. But if you mean a child's toy vehicle, hmm... I don't think so because there are a lot of people everywhere... hope it helps
Thanks fellas
Please note: During holiday periods and summer months, peak pricing may apply. $35.95 — Adult $30.95 — Senior (ages 65+ with ID) $30.95 — Youth (ages 12-17) $30.95 — Student (ages 18+ with ID) $25.95 — Child (ages 4-11) FREE — Children 3 and under and Academy members
They have special rates for school groups.
definitely a great place to visit with various exhibits and activities.
There is a yearly "neighborhood" day, when the Academy offers free admission. Also the Bay Area Libraries offer "Discover and Go", to card holders. This allows a family of 2 (1 adult and one child) free admittance once a month. Look up DISCOVER AND GO for more details
Ebt card user gets $3 general admission.
About $30 if I remember correctly. Admission prices are posted on the website
There is plenty of parking spots
Theres cafeteria style facilities loads for the kids to do interactive etc
Definitely not more than an hour, 30 mins walk thru if there's any line.
I have heard places do thatm but you would be best off to call or use their chat help connection on their site for an answer. They were extremely helpful with my concerns on visiting. I'm very sorry for your loss.
It's an hourly system that maxes off at $20 or so i was there for several hours and didn't pay $20. Road is free but hard to come by.
Children aged 4 - 11 are $29.95...tho, children 3 and under are free...do with that what you will.
Yes, there are maps and peoples all over the place that guide you.
Good for one day only
Stanyan park hotel is the closest. There's a lot in union square.
Golden Gate Park
They are not.
I didn't see this when i visited 3 weeks back.
No limits, just bring whatever is needed for your baby's comfort.
Their canopy isnt very expansive. I would call and see what they can offer
Check online. It seems easier for you instead of getting just part of it.
The website says that it's every Thursday. Price was $22 as of 6/18.
Yes, there are options for just that, if you plann to go 3+ times, i think the pass pays for it self. Enjoy!
Definitely not.
I did not see any octopi but I did see flamboyant cuttlefish
They're are separate memeberships, but I believe DeYoung is covered in a broader SF museum membership package
Donated your ticket to the Sick Kids Fund. In hopes we can wipe out that terrible family vacation wrecker.
The school would decide that. As long as you're decent, the Academy doesn't care what you wear.
You can usually park for free on MLK Drive although you may have to walk a few hundred yards to get to the museum from the closest parking. If you really need to park in the Music Concourse Garage, it's not cheap: $6/hour, with a daily maximum of $33 on weekends and slightly cheaper on weekdays.
I only saw a T-rex skeleton at the main entrance. I remember there being more when I was a kid, before the remodel.
About 30 minutes to an hour, depending on which one
June 3,2018 or Thats all I know.
The venue is big enough that even on busy days there's always something to see or do. The earthquake experience is always going to have a line so don't be discouraged by that.
Yes you can, but you are supposed to eat at the cafeteria and not have food out at any of the exhibit.
Oh yes
Yes - it's $3 per coat or box (each box can hold a couple backpacks and you can toss a coat there too if you don't want to hang it).
Yes it appropriate for kids. They will enjoy it.
If you have a library card you can get a free adult and child pass. Discovery and Go. Try also groupon about $5 off
Steinhart Aquarium is housed inside of the California Academy of Sciences. 55 Concourse Drive, San Francisco, CA 94118
