Upananda, Yes, they have done extensive research since it was officially discovered in 1878. In addition to exploration, they have undertaken extensive conservation and protective measures to maintain the caverns. It's worth noting that the Commonwealth of Virginia has very robust cave preservation regulations. As for the value, I'm not sure one could quantify it, though I believe it qualified as a significant site and has been designated as such since 1974. Do take the tour, it's informative and breathtaking.
