That is an unfortunate bit of misinformation about Chicago. First of all, Downtown Chicago is a separate space from inner city Chicago. Even inner city Chicago is not so rampant & overrun with gang activity that people can't travel safely on the street. Don't believe everything you hear. It's a problem, but this is not done kind of war torn area. Not to mention that violence has been steadily decreasing anyway. We still have work to do, but plenty areas of Chicago are perfectly safe.
It is safe
Navy Pier is a low crime tourist area. Most of the gang activity you refer to is confined to certain neighborhoods which you won't see in the guide books
Thats a pretty high traffic area. Day times good. I wouldnt stay out to late anywhere downtown.
There is a youth escort policy that keeps some of that activity at bay.
We didn't see any activity like that. There were regual police patrol and with k-9. There were cameras everywhere as well. Even other places like Union Arena didn't have activity like that and it is very down town. It really didn't look or feel like anything you see on tv, I'm sure there are places like that but we never saw it.
It's not seedy but there could be gang members anywhere if you think about it. Very crowded yet family friendly.
No
Too many police for the tourist for there to be a big gang presence.
There was no any such gang things when i was thete. I think its safe.
