Always purchase from the site or over the phone and at least a month out. If you have kiddos under 8 don't take the mine tour. You can't carry the kiddos and it's a lot of walking and they don't recommend that for younger ones. Also coach seats are open air so if you are coming before June I would upgrade.
I would highly recommend buying online and making a reservation.
We took the longest tour which goes into the mine the deepest and had the longest train ride. Total time was about 4 hours. If being in a closed in area doesn't bother you, you'll enjoy the history and tour very much. They supply flashlights, hardhats and the tour guide. Be sure to arrive early so you don't miss your train. It's the only way to get to the mine. There's an interesting small museum at the station and of course a gift shop. Some old train cars and other things about the mine and some history. Well worth the extra money taking the longest tour. Bring your jacket. It was 80 degrees outside the mine and about 55 degrees deep inside. I don't remember what we paid, but it was not expensive.
