Yeah he should be safe
Dog eat dog world out there, If he wants to kill to survive, so does the wolves.
When you travel to hunt, you are more likely to be injured or killed in your car than you are out in nature. Bears are one thing that people particularly fear, but there are no grizzly bears and black bears are rare in the area. Of the two bears, black bears are less dangerous, smaller and far more timid. Additionally, there are noticeably fewer trees in the sawtooth area than other areas of the Rockys. This means there are fewer animals overall. And while elk and even deer have hurt people, you again far FAR more likely to hit one on the road than encounter one in "the wild". Finally, one thing that could cause death in the mountains is dehydration and altitude sickness, however, the sawtooth mountains are relatively short, not often exceeding 10k in elevation, meaning altitude sickness is unlikely, and there are many alpine lakes that are often quite safe to drink from. Hope this makes you feel better.
