Great place to visit try to go when it's copper in three day like very early in the am or evening or fall. I went with friends and took my new 🐕. Poor thing she was so 🔥 🥵 I had her stand in the creek and she just lapped up the water while I wet her down.

Loved it here. Great to be around water in the desert, I've been missing it ever since I got heat exhaustion in Joshua Tree. $3 fee is reasonable and easy to pay, or you can get an annual pass at the nearby Ranger office by calling ahead to make sure someone's available, as they're still closed to walk-ins (April 2022). Some Flat Earther scratched out the "few millions" of years on the volcano sign that explains how the whole region was formed by a huge eruption 1000x the strength of Mt St Helen's, over 50mi radius. Geology is so cool!

Went early morning only a few cars in the lot. Easy hike with nice views along thr way. Lots of shade. Unfortunely the end is closed of due to fire, I wanted to connect to another hike so this was just a short day.

If you are in Glenwood, NM the Catwalk is a great place to visit to get out in nature. It's about a 10 to 15 minute drive to the actual entrance from town. Once there, there is a $3.00 a vehicle fee to enter. If you don't have cash that's OK, the park has a posting of a QR code to pay digitally. Inside the park are picnic tables which is nice if you want to spend a longer time in the park and have lunch. Just remember to leave the area how you found it. The trail has a couple different paths to take for exploring with one of the past being cut short due to closure. The only downside to the park is a current infestation of little green flying bugs that are constant through the trail, so I'd recommend long sleeves and pants. Not sure why the bugs are around, I'm told that is not common. However, once you get pass the bugs the hike is worth it to see the cave walls and hanging out by the running water.

Does entry to the atwalk close daily ?
Beware that DOGs may get pretty anxious about stepping on the iron grate walk ways. My usual pretty calm 9 yr old Goldendoodle "granny" was very nervous due to being able to see thru to a VERY deep river bed below her feet , her feet were small enough to get partially thru open "holes" making her stumble. Finally got the hang of it,we just went slow. Worth the challenge to descend to "doggy wading pools" further ahead.
It is an open recreation area, you park and pay in the box so it doesn't really have ooen/closed hours.
Usually it's open year round. Check the website https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/gila/recarea/?recid=2029
It's $3 to get in. Says right there on toll box; but with no ranger on duty and no envelopes sometimes people just don't pay.
Yes, they have some picnic areas with grills near the parking lot. Everything else is a bit of a hike from there but not too far
How far to the catwalk answer When you park in the parking lot you are at the very beginning of the catwalk Trail and there are picnic tables and the white water is running right there from the parking lot to the first catwalk is probably about 1/10 of a mile from the parking lot to the very end where the steps are broken due to landslides and mudslides several years back is only about a half a mile from the parking lot to the very end. If you want to hike further you certainly may I did and I had a good time and there were swimming holes and small waterfalls from the parking lot to the very end as far back as you can walk is only one mile one way Note of caution From the parking lot to the end of safety is about a half a mile and that is where all the cat walks are done you can walk past there and many people do you should have a sturdy walking stick and be in pretty decent shape I am 60 years old I did it just fine I am used to hiking you have to have good balance and skill
It was open last week. No bad WX so it should be open this week. Enjoy your hike!
Spring, Summer & Fall. I'd say July, August. My family and I hiked at 12pm till like 5pm.
