Lower temperatures allow more man-made snow to be made in the autumn, and a super heavy snow season can keep the ski lifts running as late as Independence Day. That also goes for the opposite, they might open later than Thanksgiving if temperatures are abnormally warm and close earlier than Memorial day if the snow season is abnormally scant.
