No you don't but if you like one you have to spend time with the pup. After you pick out your pup you need to wait a couple days till they get spayed or nuetuered. I rescued a beautiful black Lab named Leslie. We're best buds now. She had been mistreated. Most of those poor animals have been. Go get you one. Glad I did
