If you wanna swim where there are lifeguards on duty then the area is roped off. But there are areas away from the swimming are. I've personally never swam in any of the off areas. Will probably be lots of mud there.
There are areas off of a couple of trails where you can go distance swimming where there is no one around

It's very hard to distance swim because they are not opening enough swimming sections, in my opinion. We were surprised that on a hot Sunday they waited hours before they opened half of the swimming areas and there were large groups of people. We left early because of it.
