I see that reservations are not accepted for the campground. If so, what is the best way to ensure a campsite is available?

Most State Park Campgrounds do not take reservations, first come first serve. No phone lines out there, I'm sure, and little to no cell service. Try coming on a weekday early in the day for your best shot.

Its first come so i would recommend getting there a day early to have options on location, and you can stay multiple days..

When we were there we were there with only one other camper. It is an out of the place, so I don't think finding a spot would be a problem. It is a great place to go for a quiet time with plenty of hiking to do.

First of all, this isn't a State Park, it's US Forest Service and they typically do not take reservations. I've never not found a die in a US National Forest.
