The Food & Care Coalition was founded in the fall of 1988 by virtue of public dialogue and numerous meetings. The agency is funded primarily by private donations from foundations, corporations, and the community at large. Under 10% of their funding comes from any government source. Their executive director is Brent Crane, who has been with the organization since 1989 and the director since 1993, and remains in that capacity today. The agency established a collaborative service delivery system that is now being modeled elsewhere in the state and around the country. Their agency is operated by a small but dedicated staff and high participation of community members who volunteer their time to move mission activities forward in practical and common sense ways.
