The amazing person at the passport counter helped me so patiently and gently. Their calmness and helpfulness really put me at ease with the odd passport problem I had been experiencing. They solved my problem like a professional, and I am so grateful for their service today.

It's the post office it's the same as it always has been and probably always will be. Long lines, expensive services with postage prices that increase yearly and filled with staff who hate their job for every 1 good employee you will have 2 bad ones who just get ran over all day long and just want to get your transaction complete so they can help the next person in line.

You will need to go to the post office to collect the mail and get the details for the hold. Non collection usually means the box was not being emptied and was too full. Hope this helps...
Hopefully this link answers all your questions. Appointments vary depending on which post office you want to go to. Some need them and others don't https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/under-16.html
At the post office here in Provo, East Bay area, you do not need an appointment. I only know this because I will be updating mine soon and had asked the same question. Hope this helps.
