It is very chilly. The current hasnt been noticeable the times I've been, so not sure about that. The falls don't hit the hole directly, they run down the rocks to it. It is VERY slippery, and deep.
Because of strong currents from the falls it is discouraged. In 2016 there was one death. They consider it a viewing attraction and not a swimming hole. So do so at your own risk.
Its great to jump in right when you get to the top after hiking uphill for 2 miles. Its an instant relief, but gets cold quickly.

You can, just be prepared to be sitting in ice cold water. They don't recommend standing under the falls though, due to safety reasons.
They do have put on some warning signgs about strong currents, but it's not prohibited. The water is crazy cold even in the summer.
