Since 2000, my property taxes have been frozen since I am completely disabled. Since 2016, I have now turned 65 as has my wife. Should I now change my frozen code from disabled to over 65?, which would be easier to verify (age). Does it matter?

Check with your appraisal district because in Harris count, sometimes the school district offers a larger exemption for the over-65. Also ask them if the surviving spouse for the disability has a cash amount attached to it. If it doesn't, that means that when the person with the disability passes away the exemptions will no longer help you. An over-65, on the other hand, does have the same cash amount attached, so when the person with the 65 passes away, the exemptions will continue for the surviving spouse. You might want to call your school district office first before you switch and ask them if they "reset" the ceiling, or the frozen dollar amount whenever you switch. If they do, you will have to decide if the new exemption value is worth getting your frozen dollar amount reset. In Harris County, some school districts reset, and some don't. Sara in Houston
