Get your new bank account, keep your existing one temporarily , but just until you get your SS checks changed. Tell your new bank that you want your SS checks changed to be deposited into your new account with them. Then as soon as you get everything switched and going to the right account close your old account at that time. You do not have to go to the SS office. I hope this helps you.
You may be able to do it online at myss.gov if you have an account set up on there but if not, take your banking info in to your nearest SS office and they will be able to do it quickly there.
