The Museum is free for people 19 and under and on the first Saturday of every month from 5pm to 11pm. The reality is that because they accept public funding they my only request a "suggested donation" and so one may pay any amount from 0 dollars and up and they may not refuse to let you enter. That being said this is an institution that is well worth supporting and I would encourage you to donate as much as you can.
You can apply for an ny id if you are a new york city resident. With that id you can get free memberships at quite a few new York city establishments zoos mussuem aquarium
