Yes you can get around just fine as there is bus transportation with numerous bus stops
I believe the majority of the bus stops are within walking distance, if not all of them but renting the golf cart is really the BEST way to enjoy Fort Wilderness
No, you will definitely want to rent a golf cart if you are not driving in.
I've been there twice. We walked everywhere and relied on the buses to get to the theme parks. But we are all relatively young and in good health.
Bus stops are an easy walk from the cabins. Depending on the cabin you get, 1-6 min walk at most. But sometimes there are long waits for the bus... usually we had a few min wait but once we waited 40 min (March 2021). Most places do not have parking for cars. Just your cabin and the front lobby area. So you won't be able to drive to the pool or any of the food or shops. After we had that 40 min wait, we chose to get a golf cart and we're happier because of it. But you do not need it.
You can get around with ease with the golf carts but they are booked quickly so I'd jump on it. The bus stops are outside each subdivision of cabins. 5 min walk at the furthest point.
