They take reservations through reservations.gov, and if they are not sold out by reservation, all sites not reserved are available for one night only on walk-in.

I would always suggest reservations for a camping trip.
Yes on line six months in advance. Serrano has only 2 none reservable campsites, those gone by Thursday. Cancellations to occur, sometimes these can be grabbed by calling the kiosk.
