She bought it around 1922 when they moved from Connecticut . It started as a small farm house and when her husband died it is said that a psychic told her to build add-ons to apease the spirits of those that the guns he manufactured killed. She did it because she was told to never finish it and to build odd structures to confuse the ghosts. It was damaged in an earthquake and most of the front of the house was closed off as she rairly had visitors anyway. She was only 4'11" tall so alot of the doors are very short and narrow and had special stairs made for her because of her arthritis. The stairs were only about 3" high and 12" deep. She was receiving $1000/day ($22,000/day today) so money was no issue.freaky house.
She bought a lil farm early 1900s and built on from there
She purchased a unfinished farm house in 1884, and that is what is now the Winchester Mansion, I am not sure how old the farm house was when she purchased it. She continued to work on the house from 1884 until her death nearly 40 years later.
