After being there in person just last week, I think one should save their time and money and stay elsewhere. The staff is under prepared (and few and far between) and we found the experience to be quite overrated. It has a beautiful view, being right on the south rim, but you could stay somewhere else in the park and walk or drive over to see it instead of staying or eating there.
They have rooms available now. The guides and mule tours also have openings due to cancelation amid the virus issue.
Yes it's a hotel overlooking one of the 7 wonders of the world. People from around the world come here. Honestly your best bet to get a room short notice would be in January and February.
Off-season you may be able to get reservations at El Tovar but I would surprised if you can find anything now for 2019, it's the Centennial anniversary of the park. El Tovar has the best access to the amazing site, and foreign visitors/tours book way ahead. You may have to stay off-rim at another hotel. A bus ride or walk from the other hotels (more amenities) are worth the glorious experience if you can't get reservations at El Tovar. But be sure to reserve dinner there at least! (Yes, do that now)
I agree. Because it is not a huge hotel reservations must be made far in advance.
Yes, people tend to pre book years in advance
