Hi Chris, please ignore the previous answer as it is incorrect. I have been going to roaring camp for many years, and I can tell you with certainty that the train does indeed stop at the top of the hill, but you can stay up there for indefinite amount of time. There is TONS of hiking that can be done from that spot. You do not need to make it back to the same train that dropped you off, but you just need to make sure that you make it back before the final train of the day departs. If you miss the final train, it is an easy walk back down the mountain. Also, while you are at the top, the train that took you up there does stop for about 20-30 minutes while the conductor gives you some history of the surrounding redwoods. If you plan on hiking and taking another train down the mountain, just let them know. Henry Cowell state park is also right next door with beautiful trails
I don't know about the ride to the boardwalk but the redwood train doesn't stop. Its a beautiful ride through the redwoods and there are lots of trails you can hike from the train depot In response to the next answer: maybe it depends on the time of year because when I went they did not allow anyone on or off the train at the top or anywhere along the way and it was the only train of the day. No later or earlier trains ran that day. This was mid week in May.
We went to the Thomas event so we did not exit the train but as we were riding the train and we notice there is many spots to hike ,bike and many families amongst the park
