Fall is a great time to go if you have the chance, brisk cold air depending on when you go. Best of luck to you!

Depends on what you want to see as far as the self tour, but I just got back from the Grand Canyon in July and it was super crowded with large tour groups (Boy Scout troups). I'd expect that fall is a better time to go, since people may not have as much time for a trip so far out of the way, unlike during extended summer or spring break vacations.

We were at the North Rim in Sept of 2017, the Aspins had turned it was beautiful. The north rim closes in Oct.

Also looking to head north west to Mount Rushmore, then bounce over to Canada side to see Niagara Falls.
