So I have a crow that can't be returned to the wild, I know they are a protected bird, but how do you go about getting them checked out? I would like to sex the bird, can't find anyone to see him. I won't leave him to the clutches of nature.

Hello Michelle, I am assuming you are talking about an American crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos. They are a native species, and as such cannot be held captive without a special permit. You can contact Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for more information about permits, and if you are unable to find their contact information, you can call our clinic at 971-361-2209 to get ODFW's info. I agree that crows are fascinating and worthy of veterinary care, and we are happy to provide veterinary support as the animal is getting back to health to be released. If the crow has been living closely enough with humans that it cannot be returned to the wild, we will not be able to provide veterinary care for it, other than humane euthanasia. We follow state and federal regulations, so we do not see patients that are not being held legally. I hope you understand the ethical, environmental and legal guidelines that we follow. Thanks, Dr. Lisa Harrenstien, owner, AEVC.
