Actually at Willamette national cemetery, which is in Portland Oregon, they bury spouses in one plot on top of each other, not side by side. Now I don't know if they do that everywhere but I know that's what they do here

My parents are buried at Willamette cemetery and my father died first and then when my mom died they put her coffin on top of my dad’s coffin.

I believe that spouses can be buried side by side in National cemetery my husband is buried in Portland National Cemetery and I plan to be buried with him
