When the Mexican-American war ended, Fort Union was established to guard American interest in the Southwest. Ultimately, Fort Union was the largest fort west of the Mississippi River. What's left, and what you well see, at Fort Union are the hushed remnants of three forts, very well preserved.
It is a Civil War era fort used to defend the Santa Fe Trail from Native Americans during the Indian War. Also, during the Civil War when the Union army defended New Mexico, Glorietta Pass, and the Santa Fe Trail from the Confederate Army.
This is a fort that helped as a supply and way station for the pioneers. It shows how military and pioneer life was like. A must see to appreciate New Mexico history.
This is the remains of a fort established in New Mexico in the late 1800s. It's basicly an outpost in the wilderness and is quite fascinating. A guidebook helps describe the various buildings, the walls of which are fairly well preserved, and the nearby overland trails. The gift shop has some interesting books as well.
