Excellent historic site that is easy to get to off of I25. Rangers were engaged and helpful. The jr Ranger program was informative and fun, and took about 90 minutes to do all aspects. The VC is nice and has good exhibits. The remains of the fort are a worthwhile walk to get a sense of the scope of this site in its heyday. Very enjoyable stop.

Interesting historical information, very educational and worth taking 2 hours to enjoy the interpretive trail. Information displays throughout the walk that explained the timeline of use and what daily life was like for enlisted soldiers through the commanders. Path was packed fine gravel that would be ok for strollers or wheelchairs.

Nice 1 hour or so visit. Took the trail around fort. Very few buildings remain. Mostly rock foundations where buildings were. Did see lots of antelope deer.

I thought Fort Union was an awesome stop off of interstate 25. The park rangers at the fort were very informative and had a lot of knowledge on the forts history. We spent about 20 minutes chatting with the ranger about the history of the fort and the surrounding area. I enjoyed seeing the Santa Fe trail ruts and the marker in the center of the fort displaying the altitude above tidewater. Really a cool place, highly recommend.

Yes it is free. You walk a long way to the fort. Interesting, but very little has been restored. Historically it is significant.
Was one small group ahead of us. But there was a thunderstorm close.
Built in 1861 to defend against Confederate troops in the American Civil War. The ruins has the housing, mess hall, jail, blacksmith and hospital Pretty cool to see
All NPS parks participate in the Jr ranger program, they all have the badges and some still have patches.
A quick look using Google Maps "measure distance" function shows the circumference to be 1.25 miles.
Went today (4/7) and the weather was absolutely beautiful. Slightly chilly and breezy but perfect for a stroll around the ruins
