I think there's a park that you can camp in. And take some hikes and still enjoy yourself even if there was no damn. Waters low you can go down and look for rocks turtles or whatever you and your kids find

At lake Whitney, north of waco. I believe there may be others further north. No dams anywhere near the park.

Brazos and Houston area has had flood issues... memorial day 2015, tax day 2017, then Harvey... the Brazos has a large water shed starting up around Waco.
