Presque Isle campground is separate from the others. You can make a reservation way in advance via internet, phone, or email - That's especially nice if you know what you want, and see it available. When you arrive, you are checked on by the ranger, but you can just go to the site, if you have its number with you, and set up even if the ranger isn't in the entrance station. Or.... get there before 5 PM (I think) and stop as you go into the campground because you have to pass through that entrance anyway. For me, Presque Isle is the most beautiful place around....Not nearly as many noisy camper gizmos as elsewhere - more people actually CAMPING as compared to parking in a trailer with a giant pile of electronics around them. You go to the visitor center to get a campsite st one of the three outpost camp grounds. To get a campsite at Presgue or Union you go directly to the campground.
